Peter Trombetti – Engineering – A Field Worth Exploring

Engineers are the brilliant minds behind the technology, ideals, and companies that progress the world into the future. They are the problem-solvers and curious bunch that make it much easier on the rest of us. Everyday technologies like the inner workings of refrigerators or the construction of bridges are created and monitored by engineers behind the scenes. It is an absolutely necessary field for us to continue moving forward.

When you stop and realize the importance of engineering, you would assume that we have plenty for years to come and that colleges are filling up with engineering applicants. Surprising, however, only 4% of U.S. college undergraduates are studying engineering, which is roughly 1/6 of the percentage of engineering undergrads in Asia. More than half of U.S. engineers are over the age of 45, which means within the next 10-20 years, there will be a greater amount of retirees versus the new employees straight out of college. The need for engineers is predicted to rise 11% over the next decade alone. It is, in fact, the perfect time to graduate with a degree in engineering.

Along with its job reliability, valuable contributions to the world, and above-average salaries, engineering also benefits from being a wide-range and diverse field. Students studying engineering can graduate with a civil, mechanical, architectural, electrical, or industrial engineering degree. It is one of the only studies in the entire world that is specific enough to appeal to almost every single person. The fact that is it so diverse also solidifies its necessity in society. Especially in the near future, advances in biotechnology, embedded software, sustainability and energy efficient design, advanced manufacturing, automation and robotics, and 3D and Imaging technology will rely on engineers. The bandwagon is quickly filling up and we will all be thankful for it!
